Skincare/Makeup Declutter (products I’m tossing)

“Time for a good ‘ole DECLUTTER.. I don’t need this, this, or that anymore.”

IMG_20180105_132641

Today’s post is a little bit old-school. A good, old-fashioned makeup declutter. You know, “I have upgraded to this,” or “I never use that.” That’s the vibe we’re going for here. In case you have any of these products and they work tremendously for you, please let me know! Maybe I’ll reconsider. It’s just that I haven’t touched these in months and need to move on.

Don’t hold onto anything that doesn’t serve you a purpose any longer!
*Ladies, this same concept applies to relationships too* 😉

IMG_20180105_132335

First up, my hardest product to let go of: Aveeno Skin Brightening Daily Scrub – $7.99

I love, love, love the scent of this exfoliator. I cannot tell you how much I love it. There is something so calming and soothing to the scent of this product. It also did a great job; my skin felt v soft after applying, and it didn’t strip my skin. It also did not irritate my skin.
My reason for tossing: I splurged and purchased the Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion, and ya girl does not need two exfoliators. HOWEVER, this was a great drugstore option while I used it.

Second, I have my CVS brand Daily Calming Moisturizer.
*Heads up, I couldn’t find the CVS brand of this online so I linked the Aveeno form of this. CVS’s is just a knock-off version for less money.*

I loved this moisturizer. It was recommended to me by a friend. I would agree that yes, it was soothing. I used it all throughout the summer and it felt quenching on dry, sunburnt skin. I have no complaints about this product at all. In fact, I’ll probably repurchase it.
My reason for tossing: it expired. And I don’t need to be clogging my pores with old products!

IMG_20180105_132425

Next is the Soap & Glory Clean on Me shower gel – $10 for a full-size bottle
My reason for tossing: it irritated my skin. I’m not sure what did it, could’ve been the scent (it’s good, but rather strong). My skin doesn’t like harsh perfumes, so I need to just get rid of this and continue to use a milder shower cleanser.

Then there’s the Body Shop Skin-Clearing Tea Tree Toner – $14
My reason for tossing: I didn’t notice a difference in my skin using this, though I must be honest, I used my Mario Badescu cucumber cleansing lotion much more than I committed to the tea tree toner. It’s also expired. Time to toss!

Onto my e.l.f. Mattifying Blotting Papers – $5
My reason for tossing: these blotting sheets have been sitting in my vanity for months and I never touch them. Here’s why: you can blot with tissue/toilet paper. Sure, it’s not fancy, but it soaks up just as much oil as a blotting sheet. I firmly believe these are only created to make more money. Girl, just blot while you going potty.

IMG_20180105_132513

Skyn Iceland Relief Eye Cream – $45 for full-size
My reason for tossing: mainly, if I like this product, it will cost way too much to repurchase a full-size container. I haven’t touched this product since the day I got it. I’m not a huge undereye moisturizing person, and I have a Vitamin C one from the Body Shop I need to use first.

LA Girl HD Pro Concealer – $4.99
My reason for tossing: I didn’t get the right shade to match me, so I can’t shit on this product. While I can’t discuss the quality, I didn’t like the applicator. The wrong shade along with the dislike of applicator, I need to toss this. It’s just taking up space.

So that’s my little declutter! Have you experienced any of the same product disappointments? Or should I save one and keep testing it out?!

Anyways, this has been some fun girl time. Thank you for reading! Let me know your thoughts below.

July IPSY Review

“This bag had very experimental products.”

So I genuinely did like this month’s bag. It gave me a product I’ve never used (brow cream), a new light moisturizer to try, and a staple blending brush to pack on darker colors.

Let’s get on with the review!

  1. Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Bronzer – Park Ave Princess (retails for $30.00)
It’s not bad.. but I’m not living for it either. I wish I had gotten the matte version of this, because this bronzer is meant to give you a subtle “sun kissed glow.” The sun kissed I’m okay with, but the glowy bronzer es no bueno.
Again, it’s not a bad bronzer. It will definitely do the trick, but do I think I’ll repurchase? No. Considering you can get the Physician’s Formula butter bronzer for $15.00 at the drugstore, I am not convinced I need the Tarte one in my life.
    Would I repurchase? No.
  2. Chella Eyebrow CreamTantalizing Taupe (retails for $26.00)
I don’t know how to feel about this! The product is cool – but, I am also a complete newb when it comes to filling in my brows. I was doing my best not to go heavy-handed, and I think this product is great for a beginner (like myself). I wish the color was a little lighter, but I didn’t want that to affect my review. I do like it! And will continue to use it.
    Would I repurchase? Potentially!IMG_20170725_200623
  3. IBY Beauty Crease Brush (retails for $12.00)
I love this! Just the brush I wanted to add to my collection and I have already used it to smoke out darker shadows in the outer-v of my eye and into my crease. This is a great staple item to have and I am happy I received it!
    Would I repurchase? Definitely.IMG_20170725_200653
  4. Caudalie Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet (retails for $39.00)
This price is so outrageous lol. The moisturizer is nice, and kind of doubles as a primer once it dries, as it is rather tacky. So, if you were looking to use it as a moisturizing primer, then I suppose I could be convinced of the price. However, I don’t see any difference in how this makes my skin look/feel than when I use my Garnier Moisture Rescue Gel-Cream (which is a fraction of the price), except for the fact that the Caudalie makes my skin tacky.
PS – does anyone else think this smells like peanuts? Just me?
    Would I repurchase? No.IMG_20170725_200528
  5. OFRA Cosmetics EyeshadowGold Rush (refill retails for $12.00)
I was underwhelmed when I first tried this out, as I was expecting more pigment from Ofra. Typically, their eyeshadows are v vibrant and colorful, but I didn’t get that from this gold. Then I swatched it again, and BAM. I got a lot more color payoff, however, I can find better shimmer shadows in my Carli Bybel palette that retails for $14.50.
    Would I repurchase? No.

So that was my July bag! What are your thoughts? Did you get any of the same products? What did you love/hate?

Lip Luxury: Milani Moisture Lock Lip Oil Treatment

“I would pay more than $8.00 for this lip moisturizer.”

IMG_20170627_192424

Chapped, dry lips from the sun at the beach? Or maybe you’re just looking for a nighttime moisturizer to soothe your lips while you catch some Zzzz’s. I’ve found the answer for the best quality and price point, and that is the Milani Moisture Lock Lip Oil Treatment for $8.00 (at any CVS). Personally, I like the almond coconut scent, but I haven’t tried any other ones yet.

It can be kind of strange, slathering on a lip oil before going to bed. You’re like, “Is this going to be messy?” or “Will I get it on my pillow?” No, no, my friends. Right before you crawl into bed and put on an episode of Friends (or whichever Netflix show you’re binging atm), use your favorite lip scrub – or not – and coat your lips with this soothing lip oil treatment.

IMG_20170627_192541

It is such a creamy and thick formula that gives all the luxury you could imagine applying to chapped lips. The applicator is wide, which helps to distribute the product evenly and cover more surface. I typically don’t need to dip the applicator back into the bottle, as one coat is enough.

This is my holy grail for nighttime lip moisture and I would be happy to pay more than $8.00 for this, which says a lot about the quality of a drugstore lip treatment. I would absolutely recommend this to someone dealing with chapped or dry lips and have already done so! Hopefully my mom isn’t reading this, because she’ll probably get it for her next birthday.

Has anyone else tried this? Or any other Milani lip care products? Please let me know – as I’m always wanting to try new things!

FYI: other flavors are – lemon honey, peach mango, grapeseed, primrose, grapefruit, pomegranate, and raspberry.

The Pros & Cons to Using a Gel Moisturizer

“Does it help you stay matte? Do you actually feel moisturized?”

img_20170304_131823
Cost: $6.69 at Target (but of course in the city it cost me like $8.99 at a CVS)

I wanted to try this out to see if it would help balance out my oily skin. And by “this” I mean the Garnier Refreshing Gel-Cream for normal/combo skin.

We’re getting somewhere – I truly think we are. However, I don’t think this is a holy grail product. I will say, this type of skincare might be a holy grail, but I’m not convinced the Garnier gel-cream is it.

So I do like this, don’t get me wrong.

PROS:

  • It’s incredibly lightweight.
  • Has a lovely light fragrance.
  • Absorbs into the skin within a minute. I am not left with a tacky feeling, but more of a smooth “aloe”-like feel, if that makes sense?
  • Hydrates my skin, but I only use it in the morning before applying makeup. I want something light for daytime wear so that potentially I can mask my shiny t-zone (that’s the goal here people).
  • As far as I can tell, it does contribute to remaining matte for longer periods of time. I find myself less shiny further into the day now.

CONS:

  • You don’t experience that sinks-into-the-skin-and-feels-super-moisturizing sensation. But I guess, perhaps, you won’t! It’s a gel.
  • Not the cheapest drugstore moisturizer, yet one of the only gel ones on the market that I’ve seen.
  • There is just no “wow” factor to this product. It does the job but doesn’t feel like an item I couldn’t live without.

So here’s my consensus: I like the idea of a gel moisturizer, but I need more of a gel-cream. Something that mimics a lotion, but carries the lightweight benefits of a gel.

IMG_20170330_213821

I am considering the Seaweed Oil-Control gel cream by the Body Shop. I tried this on the back of my hand in the store, and it was a magnificent lightweight product. Considering it also fights oiliness, I want to give this a shot. It’s $20.00, so I think I’ll wait for another 40% off sale.

Have you tried this gel moisturizer? What were your thoughts? Did you repurchase? Should I look elsewhere? I love all recommendations and chatting about it! Feel free to leave me a comment below.

Magical Makeup Monday: NEW Products Review

“Probably one of my most successful tries at new products.”

img_20170304_132322

I picked up a few things that have been on my “buy next” list over the weekend and figured I’d share some first impressions! We have a gel moisturizer by Garnier and two face makeup products, one by Wet n Wild and another by Rimmel London.

  1. Wet n Wild Photo Focus foundation in shade nude ivory is going to take some getting used to. I like it, I really do! However, it’s more of a lighter coverage foundation than I expected. Watching reviews/tutorials on YouTube gave me higher expectations for the coverage, but I must also speak to how buildable this foundation is. I was able to apply a second coat and cover more areas without achieving cake face status.
    Price: $5.99

2. Garnier Moisture Rescue Gel Cream for normal/combo skin. It’s too early to call it, but this could prove to be a game-changer. Not only that, I could see this becoming a holy grail product. As a girl with oily skin, I look for lighter moisturizers. I completely understand that oily skin still needs hydration, but I would like to try my hand at a gel moisturizer. A little goes a long way, so I’m hopeful the jar will last awhile! Beautiful packaging for a decent price, too.
Price: $5.99

img_20170304_131823

3. Rimmel London Stay Matte Pressed Powder in 004 (sandstorm) proved to be just as good as everyone claimed it was. Definitely helped my skin stay matte, and applied beautifully. It appears there are only 3 shades: transparent, 004 – sandstorm, and 005 – silky beige, but surprisingly sandstorm worked well for me with the Wet n Wild foundation.
Price: $5.69

Update
: tried this new combination of products and wore it for 7 hours. My thoughts? Incredible! I can’t nail down which product might have helped conceal my shiny t-zone, but they may have all worked in conjunction. I’m going to keep experimenting with each of these individually.

Has anyone tried any of these products? Did you see similar results? I am loving them, and if I continue to do so, they will be repeat purchases.

Facial Friday: My Skincare Routine!

“Let’s get into the routine which has become my daily grind.”

img_20170216_200203

I have been meaning to do this post for awhile! Although, I wanted to tweak my routine before I got started. Prior to last year, I literally only used Cetaphil cleanser to wash my face. No face masks, no exfoliator, no handheld face massager, nothing. Just some plain old SOAP. And don’t get me wrong, that’s perfect for some people, but my skin needed help. So now I have a very different regimen, as I have become very serious about improving the texture and oiliness of my skin.

Quick breakdown: I have very oily skin, and it’s hard to keep it matte by noon. I typically don’t powder throughout the day because, well, honestly I don’t care what I look like at work. However, if I’m meeting up with the bf or going out after work, I certainly have to touch up so I don’t look like a shiny mess. Other than that, I don’t particularly have bad skin, but I definitely have problem areas (my chin and under my jawline).

To start: I cleanse. This is where I use my Solo Mio (full review here), which has quickly become my holy grail device. I will apply my Philosophy Purity facial cleanser to my face as I normally would, massaging it into the skin for a few seconds. Then I go in with my Solo Mio and cleanse my face for approximately a minute (focusing on each zone of my face for about 15 seconds).
*note: I do this twice daily, once in the morning and then again at night. Jaclyn Hill mentioned once in a skincare video that it is just as important to wash your skin when you wake up, as you release toxins and sweat while you sleep.

img_20170216_195958

Next: exfoliate. I have been using and loving the Aveeno Daily Brightening Scrub which works wonders for shedding dead skin and dirt, as well as cleaning out my pores. I have to mention as well that this exfoliator is the best-smelling face product I have ever used! I massage this onto the face with my hands only so it is not too harsh on my skin.
*note: I do consider washing my face with the Solo Mio as a mild exfoliator, so I only use the Aveeno scrub every other night (and also nights when I apply face masks).

img_20170216_200011

Lastly: moisturize.
– at night, I will follow my exfoliator with my Tarte Maracuja Oil (full review here), and I swear by this product now. A combination of my recent skincare routine and adding this face oil at night has completely transformed the texture of my skin and I have noticed the biggest difference. My skin has become so much easier to work with as far as makeup application is concerned.
– in the morning, I will follow my Philosophy face wash with a basic moisturizer from CVS, the Ultra Calming Daily Moisturizer (good dupe for the Aveeno ultra calming daily moisturizer).

img_20170216_200028

So that’s my daily skincare routine! I was considering including my face mask regimen here as well, but then figured I could dedicate an entire post to that. Let me know in the comments below if you found this helpful and use similar products! Is there anything I’m missing or should check out? As always, I’m open for discussion.
