EMPTIES (drugstore + high end)

WASSUP. I usually do my empties posts in video form nowadays, but my channel is turning into an empties post every other video lmao – I’m not having any of that. I want variety over there, so I’m bringing the empties post HERE. Why? Because I know we all love a good empties review blog post.

Below you’ll find TEN products I have completely emptied and are going into the trash as we speak. That means I’ve tried the entire packaging. I have full reviews, some of which I’ll rave about… others, meh. Let’s dive in.

Let’s start with mascaras, because I have a fuck ton of ’em.

  • Essence Volume Stylist 18 hr Lash Extension
Of the two drugstore mascaras, this one is going to be my favorite. I’d highly recommend this over the lash princess (see below), as you can achieve feathery spread lashes that will last throughout the day.
The best part? It costs $4.99
  • Essence Lash Princess Volume
This mascara I could pass on. I likely won’t repurchase. It was very liquid-y, which more often than not led to goopy, chunky lashes that didn’t spread nicely. If you’re looking for thicker lashes, you might like this. I prefer mine spread evenly and full of volume.
  • Lancome Monsieur Big
YOOOOOOOOOOOO this mascara is FIRE. I love it so much. Like, false lashes worthy. Use a lash curler before going in with this mascara and you will boost your look x 100 – I swear.
Better yet, the travel size is $12.00 and it’ll last you awhile. Run!
  • Clinique High Impact
I wasn’t a fan of this. Just didn’t impress me. The formula is very lightweight; if you’re into super natural (barely there) mascara, you may like this! For me, it wasn’t enough volume.

Moving on, shall we? Next up, powders…

  • Coty Airspun loose setting powder
THE GOAT. My favorite. Hands down. The best powder to *blot* the earth. Lol. ALSO – it’s $5.97 on Amazon. SO like, hello. It sets makeup incredibly, does not move foundation underneath. Keeps me matte throughout the day. HIDES my pores entirely. Banging product.
The only con: you’ll smell like your grandma’s perfume from 1954.
  • IT Cosmetics bye bye pores pressed powder
This was not a favorite for me. I’d say hard pass on this one. There was nothing special about it and I don’t feel a need to spend $29.00 on a powder that didn’t “wow” me. If anything, the Coty airspun blurs my pores + stays matte WAY more efficiently.

Two more makeup-related products.

  • Tonya Crooks TheBrowGal instatint brow gel
I actually really loved this product. It made it SO easy to define my brows. Quick swipe swipe, and you had some pigment (for a badass brow), plus it was easy and not messy! I’m not good with pencils or pomades so this is a bomb product for me. I’d use it daily. I also don’t think $22 is unreasonable for this product. 10/10 recommend!
  • Soho buffing powder brush
This is my ALL TIME favorite bronzer brush. I picked it up on a whim at Marshall’s or TJ Maxx years ago. It was time to retire it. Lol. It’s a solid brush, but it’ll definitely shed as you wash. Doesn’t phase me as it’s the PERFECT bronzing brush lmao. I’ll keep an eye in the future at TJ Maxx’s bc I’d love to snag it again. Otherwise, it’s available on Amazon. Distributes products well and made it look like I was a bronzing PROFESSIONAL. Super easy to use.

Lastly, skincare!

  • Origins energy boosting gel moisturizer
This was a SUPER fresh and hydrating moisturizer. I am a big fan. I’d consider buying this (if I want to spend a little extra ca$h money) because I do find the quality is THERE with this product. Origins does skincare right and ever since my friend got me started on them, I’m hooked.
  • Alba Botanica hawaiian oil-free moisturizer
I am a MEGA fan of this moisturizer. If you are ballin’ on a budget and want a super rich and lush moisturizer (daytime or nighttime), this is your option. My esthetician recommended this to me when my skin was going through it, and I’ve never looked back since. It’s an affordable option with skin benefits and hydration that sinks into your skin. I’ve purchased around 5 of these at this point. When I run out… I notice a difference in my skin! It’s parched without it. Big fan.

So those are all of my recent empties – I live for a good empties post! I hope you enjoyed and found a review of something you were interested in. Let me know your thoughts. Have you tried any of the above? I’m v curious to hear from you.

Morphe 25B Palette – what’s good?

“You can create several looks using this palette
without reaching for another.”

The 25B Bronzed Mocha eyeshadow palette from Morphe will cost you $18.00 and that means each shade is less than $1/each (there are 25 shades). The value is phenomenal for what Morphe charges and I think it’s fair to say this is worth Image result for clap emoji your Image result for clap emoji money Image result for clap emoji honey.

We’ve got lid shades, transition colors, six shimmer shades, and a handful of deeper browns/purples to create that smokey look for a night out.

With so many colors in the “neutral” range, I will admit they could’ve dropped five shades that look pretty similar to each other. I think it’s slightly pointless to include a double of any eyeshadow color in the same palette – but hey, maybe someone somewhere is using those two shades separately and then what do I know, right?

Back to this palette having enough shades for an entire look – it’s really a one-stop-shop! And for that, I love it. Imagine going away for a weekend and wanting to take just one palette – the Morphe 25B is your guy. You can get several looks ranging from light and fresh to dark and smokey. Their shimmer shades are gorgeous and provide a stunning “pop of shimmer” to the eyelid.

I am thoroughly impressed with this palette and I must admit, it does kind of tempt me to purchase their other palette of this size: the 25A Copper Spice palette. For less than $20 you just cannot beat it and the quality is there! I love Morphe’s eyeshadow palettes and I’ll happily continue to purchase.

Obsessing over the Carli Bybel Deluxe Edition Eyeshadow Palette

“Having the original palette did not stop me from purchasing the deluxe edition.”

See a little tutorial I filmed using this palette on my Instagram here!

I bought Carli Bybel’s deluxe edition eyeshadow palette from BH Cosmetics for $22.50. I actually think I snagged this while it was on sale for an even lower price, but paying $23 for this does not break the bank by any means.

For those of you that have already purchased her original palette, I’ll link my thoughts on that one here! Otherwise, ignore this paragraph because I believe that one has sold out and discontinued (wahhh).

HOWEVER – for you guys/gals who may not have known about the original palette in the first place and are still looking for a versatile, easy-to-use eyeshadow palette, this one may suit you perfectly. There are transition colors for days, shades for warm and cool-toned looks, and highlights to shine to the Gods.

With 21 different eyeshadows and highlighting shades, there is something for every eye color. This palette allows the option to build up an eye look so gradiently and effortlessly. The shadows have a ton of pigment and blend easily enough for me (a total “wannabe” makeup user). I would recommend this palette to any of my friends.

MAIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • versatility with one palette to create multiple looks
  • shadows are pigmented and blend easily for us beginners
  • highlight shades are POPPIN’ so that’s an additional benefit to get highlighter shades in an eyeshadow palette
  • loads of transition shades and colors to build up an eye look
  • extremely affordable price for 21 different colors

I absolutely adore Carli Bybel and am happy to support her by purchasing her eyeshadow palette – or both. If you have an opportunity to snag this puppy, don’t sleep on it! It is such good quality at an affordable cost.

Way to go Carli – you’re a queen on YouTube and a queen of makeup.

Exfoliating in the Shower! ft. Dove Body Polish

“This felt like an in-shower spa day for my entire body.”

When I step out of the shower after using the new Dove Exfoliating Body Polish (in the pomegranate scent), my skin is prepped for moisturization. I will get further into details momentarily, but I’ll start out by saying I’m new to the whole “body polish” trend. Essentially, it’s just a body scrub, right? Or is it finer-milled than a body scrub?

I have previously used the Tree Hut Shea Sugar Scrub ($5.99) but wasn’t so much a fan as I am of this new Dove product. The sugar scrub had larger and lesser grains and sat in a pool of slimy jelly – for lack of better wording. I wouldn’t reach for this product often and when I did I was overall underwhelmed. I didn’t feel exfoliated nor hydrated after using and would continue to use it less and less.

ENTER ———> Dove’s NEW exfoliating body polish which has been a product sent from above. I LOVE IT. And I’m going to tell you why:
PROS:

  • finely-milledgently exfoliates to remove any dead skin cells and bring forward soft and smooth skin
  • preps for moisturizer – my skin already feels like it has a layer of hydration added to it once I use the body polish, as if it’s ready to drink up more
  • scent is delicious – instantly makes me smell like I’ve already applied lotion
  • price is on point – under $6 for 10.5 ounces of a lush body polish? IN-CRE-DI-BLE. I used this product 2x a week and have hardly put a dent in it

CONS:

  • I don’t have any – I flippin’ love this shit.

We exfoliate our face 1-2 times a week, right? Why wouldn’t we extend the same luxury to the skin on our body? It is an amazing and refreshing way to exfoliate the skin, while also hydrating the body. I don’t have enough good things to say about this body polish, but I think I’ve summarized the main pros. To be honest, I can’t wait to finish this tub and try more scents!

What are your thoughts – have you tried this out yet? Do you currently exfoliate in the shower? If not, do you think you’ll begin? I’d love to chat in the comments below.

Pixi Glow Tonic: 4 Week Diary

“Follow me throughout four weeks of testing out this drugstore cult-favorite.”

img_20180423_2023208559830803806291325.jpg

I decided to keep a sort of diary detailing my experience with the Pixi Glow Tonic. I wanted to see what all the hype was about – and I am also looking for a miracle with my skin. A miracle that doesn’t cost hundreds of dollars.

Pixi Glow Tonic does contain AHAs, which are known for speeding up the rate at which your skin cells turnover to reveal new skin underneath. This might sound harsh, but the glow tonic is gentle enough for every-day use and works to bring hydration back into your skin, while balancing your skin to reveal a brighter complexion.

Here is a summary of my skin issues:

  • combination/oily skin- I get a very shiny t-zone after 4-5 hours of wearing makeup
  • currently I am suffering with persistent chin breakouts (which leads to acne scarring)
  • otherwise, the rest of my face is pretty clear

AFTER ONE WEEK OF DAILY NIGHTTIME USE:

I’m not noticing a any difference. In fact, my skin might be “purging,”** as I am noticing an increase of breakouts along my jawline and under my chin. Mainly the deep-rooted, hormonal type of breakout. I am also noticing a few outlying blemishes (outside my chin zone), but nothing too unreasonable that I can’t cover up with foundation/concealer.

As of week one, I definitely don’t see an improvement. My t-zone is still oily by mid-afternoon, and my blemishes are still present + a few new visitors. I’m hoping that I’m purging, but I won’t know for another few weeks.

**I’ve read that purging may occur when using a product that has AHAs in it, if you’ve never used one that contained AHAs previously. I have not. Purging is the surfacing of breakouts that were already there, but now speeding up the turnover process, therefore bringing them to the skin level. This is not to be confused with a reaction to the product, which can also cause breakouts (though more severly to my understanding), and if you do not notice an improvement in skin within 4-6 weeks, you are supposed to discontinue use of that product – bc girl, it’s not helping.

AFTER TWO WEEKS OF DAILY NIGHTTIME USE:

At the end of week two, I’m still feeling hopeful of this product. I’m standing on the sidelines as a cheerleader for my skincare routine.

I don’t really see an improvement, but my skin is not getting worse. To me, this is a good thing. I can’t expect results overnight, and since I’m not noticing an increase of breakouts, that tells me I’m not experiencing a reaction to this product. I do notice a redness to my face after completing my skincare routine, but nothing itchy or painful. Just kind of pink.

My nose is still shiny mid-day, so it hasn’t done anything for balancing my skin (nothing noticeable, at least).

AFTER THREE WEEKS OF DAILY NIGHTTIME USE:

End of three weeks. Here’s the one improvement I’ve seen:

  • a decrease in the size of my blemishes

If I do get a pimple, it’s much smaller and more manageable. I am not getting the large, cystic-like acne that I typically deal with in my problem area. Therefore, my blemishes are less painful/prominent.

I still have a lot of scarring, but those seem to be lessening as well – as in getting smaller. Not fading in pigment, tho. If that makes sense. No improvements on my oil production, that’s still strong and heavy per usual. Lucky me.

AFTER FOUR WEEKS OF DAILY NIGHTTIME USE:

Okay I think I’ve formed an opinion on this product, and I am deciding to keep it around. Here are the main take-a-ways I’d like to give you:

  • it’s not an absolute miracle worker (at least not for me), but it does drastically improve the texture and brightness of my skin
  • I notice a smoothness in my skin I’ve never felt before, and it’s refreshing to apply my nighttime skincare products (serum, moisturizer) on after this
  • while it didn’t help drastically with my chin breakouts, it certainly aids in keeping the rest of my face clear and bright

During the four weeks, I did not notice an improvement in oil-production in my t-zone, so that’s at least worth noting.

So that’s my month-long review of this product! I’m happy with the purchase, and would also consider this worth its price of $15.00. Ten fold. In fact, I think I’ll spend the $30 on the larger size. I can’t see myself not incorporating a toner into my skincare regimen now that I’ve noticed an improvement in my skin.

I hope this review may help someone looking into trying this product! I’d love to chat in the comments below if anyone is interested or has questions on how this product performs.

Empties Segment: hair products

“Not to spoil this post, but I liked most of these products
so f*#! the wallet, am I right?”

Let’s jump right into this empties post. Because obviously, if you’ve read my intro above, you already know a lot of these were hits for me. This means we are coming a long way as far as products that actually work. Or, I am incredibly weak and give into the packaging and scents of them. Jk jk I’ve listed the five products below that I have finished and some refreshing opinions and feedback on them. I hope you enjoy and maybe find some new products that tickle your fancy.

  1. Paul Mitchell Forever Blonde conditionerretails for $19.00
This stuff is freaking amazing. I love it. It’s as far as I’ll go into “high end” hair care. Seeing as it is almost $20 does seem steep when you compare it to Pantene or TRESemme, but I cannot get away from this now that I have given it a shot. My hairdresser recommended this and the shampoo to me, and I have since repurchased both.I personally like that it feels a little more luxe on my color-treated hair, but without an incredibly high price tag. And gurl, it’ll last you! I purchased my first bottle of conditioner last June and I’m just now writing about it running out… granted, I like to incorporate conditioning masks/treatments so I am not using this constantly but, like, still. This bitty will last you awhile.
Would I repurchase? Again and again.
  2. Paul Mitchell Forever Blonde shampooretails for $18.00
I have all of the same feelings for this shampoo as I do for the conditioner. Love the set, love them together. It’s a win/win for me. The shampoo surprisingly lasted the same amount of time as the conditioner, so I vouch that this is well worth your hard-earned DOLLAS HONEY.
    Would I repurchase? Yes ma’am.
  3. Marc Anthony Deep Repair Aloe Vera Jasmine conditioning treatmenta single treatment retails for $2.99
Okay so this conditioning treatment is nothing to call home about. I feel very much so that it lays on top of my hair and doesn’t truly nourish it. Could be my hair type, but it is not soaking up this product, leaving me with hair that does not feel conditioned. Which, is kind of the opposite effect I’d like to be left with after using a conditioning treatment. If you’re looking to spend $2.99 for a WORTHY conditioning treatment, check out the Matrix Total Results Multi-tasking Hair Mask for $5.00 (you can get two uses out of this). It is so damn good and will give you the instant results you are looking for: fresh, healthy, undamaged hair.
Would I repurchase? I think it’s pretty obvious lmao – NAH.

    IMG_20180307_150423.jpg

  4. Beauty Pin-ups Fearless Hair Rescue treatment16 oz retails for $25.99 or 6 oz retails for $19.99
This one pains me. BECAUSE I AM OBSESSED, and because it’s not all that affordable. I squeezed every last ounce out of this baby – and it was just a sample I received in Ipsy. An incredible one, at that. I freaking loved this stuff. Completely opposite of the Marc Anthony hair treatment, this completely absorbed into my hair and left me with the instant results I was in search of. Honestly tho, if you’re in love with this product and don’t want to spend $26 on a hair treatment, look at the difference in price for an extra 10 oz. of this stuff – completely worth it.
Will I repurchase? That’s a hard question, but truly, I think I might. At the very least, it’s going on a birthday wish list. I’m a firm believer that you gotta invest in what works for you.
  5. Batiste dry shampoo in Blush scent13.46 oz. size (large) retails for $7.99-$9.99 at Marshalls/TJ Maxx depending on when you go
Hands down the best bargain when buying this dry shampoo (even tho it is already considered “drugstore price”) is TJ Maxx or Marshall’s. Idk whether they get certain scents in bulk but I can pretty much count on stocking up anytime I go to the Marshall’s in center city, Philadelphia, and I feel like that’s saying something considering there are a shit ton of people buying them out of house and home. But this product, tho, is the cat’s pajamas. I will continue to buy this over and over again. It does SUCH an incredible job at masking the oils produced in your hair after going a few days without washing it. The blush scent isn’t particularly my favorite, but it fades enough to where I don’t notice it throughout the day. This product gives such a refresh to my hair/look and allows me to wash my hair fewer and further in between, allowing it to be as healthy as possible without the constant stripping of its natural oils when I wash it.
    Will I repurchase? Already have!

Soooo 4/5 repurchases?! That’s a pretty successful empties review if I do say so myself. However, not so successful on the wallet. Gotta get back to earning those Ulta points so I can cash in on some of these as a T R E A T. Anyways, thanks for hanging out and reading up on these hair products! What are your thoughts? Have you tried them as well? Let me know in the comments below.

Clean Your Makeup Brushes with One Item from the Drugstore

“Hint: it’s baby soap! *gasp* That’s right, I said it – and I put it to the test.”

IMG_20180120_160842

That’s right, people. I washed my makeup brushes with baby soap. And guess what? It’s a flippin miracle. Forget $30 brush wash or spot treatments. You can clean an entire set of brushes in less than $4. MULTIPLE TIMES.

IMG_20180120_155354

I really should be able to end this post right here, because I’m sure you’re convinced. I don’t see how you couldn’t be. However, allow me to explain and go through the method of cleaning so that you can also do this at home! Ballin’ on a budget, amirite???

  1. Gather all your dirty brushes – big and small, face and eye brushes, we don’t discriminate here. You can start with bigger brushes first and then we’ll move onto small brushes. My reasoning here is because you will dispense similar amounts of soap depending on the brush size and it would be annoying to go big, small, big, small, etc.

2. Wet the tip of your brush under a slow and lukewarm stream of water from the sink.

3. Dab a dime-size amount of soap into your less dominant palm.

IMG_20180120_151803

4. Begin to swirl your brush into the palm of your hand to create a lather. Be as careful as you can with your brush, doing your best to not turn it right side up (with the bristles in the air). We don’t want the water seeping to the base of your brush hairs – this will cause rust and shedding.

5. Run the tip of the brush back under the stream of water just enough to wet it again. Gently squeeze out excess water, this is when you will see the color of foundation and powder on the bottom of your sink.

6. Repeat with the lathering and “rinsing” until your water excess runs clear.

IMG_20180120_155354

One of the most important steps: let your brushes air dry against a cloth to absorb excess water or off the side of a counter (as mine are pictured above). You don’t want to ruin these beauties. Lay them bitches out to air dry.

This will probably take overnight – so I’d recommend washing them in the evening.

And that’s it! Easy, simple, and AFFORDABLE. I also have an affordable way to wash your beauty sponges too, if anyone wants a little blog post on that.
