5 Tricks to Slow Down Time on Vacation

I want to talk about something. Something along the lines of self care. Today’s topic will be how to slow down time on vacation.

Sounds tricky, right? How often do you get so excited while packing, arrive at your destination, have the time of your life, and have to start packing up way too early? All too often, am I right?

Hang with me here.

I want to encourage you to think about your next vacation and how you can slow it down, enjoy the sights, and take in your experience. Vacation can be a time of self-reflection and relaxation. A chance to reset from the daily grind of work or school. A time to put yourself first and to check in with yourself: How are you feeling? has your mind been racing? Has work been stressing you out? You get the gist.

Here are five tips to slowing down time on vacation:

Bring a book

This is so important. I like to bring two: one fiction and one non-fiction/self help. I love getting lost in a good story while I’m sitting by the ocean, not to mention it’s the most soothing place to focus and smash a few chapters. Reading provides a chance to escape reality and let the worries melt away.
If you’re into self-help books, this brings you the opportunity to self-reflect. There are no distractions when you sit down with a good book on the beach (well, besides someone handing you a beer) and this provides a great chance to check in with yourself. Take a moment to reset, and find a book that will help bring you peace of mind. It’s important that we do this every so often or it becomes harder to track our feelings.

Wake up early & grab a cup of coffee with a view

THIS. Omg. This. You need to get up early (at least two of the days, c’mon I know you have it in you). Spend some solo time with a cup of coffee – or tea, I’m not here to judge. Once you do it, simply be alone with yourself. I promise it’s not as intimidating as it sounds. By waking up early, you are quite literally creating more time for yourself on vacation. Proud of you.

Grab your chair and sit near the waves

Next up, I’ma need you to grab your beach chair and sit close enough so that the ocean washes up over your toes. This, of course, applies to those at the beach. Or idk, maybe you are hiking and pass a creek or lazy river. Put your toes in the water. Slow down, listen, pay attention to the feeling of cool water on your toes. This gives you another chance to slow time down a little and practice some mindfulness. Focus on feelings: sights, sounds, smells, sensations.

Don’t ignore your family (actually sit and chat with them, catch up, have real conversations instead of walking by)

I’m guilty of walking past my mom or dad, even my brother and just saying “Morning,” and walking away without having any real conversation. I challenge you to relish the time you have with family on vacation, because my guess is you don’t see them that often! A lot of us work 9-5 for five days a week, and live hours, if not thousands of miles, from our family. Take this time and relish in it. How often do you get to spend a set amount of time together? Use this time to catch up and check in on one another; I’m sure you’ll feel fulfilled by the end of your trip.

Take a walk or go for a bike ride

This is so important! Get yourself some exercise. Again, I’m going to bring this back to mindfulness. If you create the opportunity to walk/bike and clear your mind, you can focus on actual feelings in your body. Think: sights, sounds, smells, sensations. Not to mention, biking for a couple miles will tire you and the minutes literally tick by slowly when all you want to do is stop. Lmao.

Remember: any act of mindfulness will help time slow down. Life doesn’t need to feel rushed 24/7. Check in with yourself. Ask the following:

  • How am I feeling?
  • Have I experienced stress/anxiety lately?
  • What comes to mind when I think of lingering stress? Follow-up: how can I rid of said stress?

All of this being said, I hope it helps you maintain a sense of balance in your mind. When we are not rushing through our thoughts and feelings, we don’t rush through life. Thus, creating more time and slowing time down.

Thank you for hanging out with me today! Lmk any and all thoughts you have below.

Wanderlust Wednesday: El Camino Real

“BBQ & Mexican food – what an incredible combo.”

IMG_20171008_123338.jpg

Located at 1040 N. 2nd Street in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia is this phenomenal Mexican/Texas BBQ restaurant called El Camino Real. I have had just about everything from this menu, and now I can say I’ve been there for brunch!

They offer BBQ, they offer Mexican, they even offer a combination of both! Think: pulled pork in a quesadilla (ie: “Pulled Pork-a-Dilla”). It’s a combination sent from above. Image result for praise emoji

For this particular post, I visited El Camino on a Sunday morning for brunch while my family was visiting. Thus, I have a few plates to share – and boy, were they delicious.

First and most importantly, my meal. LMAO. No but really, we’re starting with me. I got the brown sugar french toast, with bananas and sweet cream. This was so good. It was a large portion and filled me up, but did not overdo it.

IMG_20171008_123321.jpg

My mom also got the same plate – and totally enjoyed it.

My fiance went a little more “classic brunch” and got the huevos rancheros. This dish is topped with a fried egg, cheddar, scallions, and “crema” sauce. He loved it! Our expectations were definitely exceeded once we began to dig in.

IMG_20171008_123312.jpg

My dad was probably the most venturous of all and ordered sausage gravy over sausage and biscuits, eggs, and potato hash. And tbh, this looked the best OF ALL. So savory and delicious. He cleaned the entire plate.

IMG_20171008_123303.jpg

So that was our brunch! I would certainly return to this location – it was a hit with my family. On another note, prices are also reasonable. If you’re willing to do some brunchy boozin’ that option is also available with Bloody Mary’s and margaritas!

El Camino is well-rounded and should receive praise for being that way.

Wanderlust Wednesday: Sneaky Freaky Bake Shop

“Bringing a Topsail edition blog post your way, fam!”

b

This is our favorite coffee shop at the beach in Topsail, North Carolina – and for good reason. Well, technically it’s located in Sneads Ferry, but that’s only a 10 minute drive from our beach house so I’m going to consider it Topsail.

ANYWAYS.

Sneaky Freaky Bake Shop has everything, and at a great price. My dad orders hot coffee, I’m an iced coffee fanatic, and we’ve probably tried one of every pastry.

I can’t remember my favorite barista’s name, but I want to shout out the woman behind the counter from June 20th-24th in the mornings, because she made me a bomb-ass iced coffee every single day. And yes, we went every single morning. I mean really, what’s a beach trip without morning coffee runs with your dad?

e

This coffee shop has a really cozy feel on the inside, with big open windows and a spacious room filled with modern seating. Anytime we’ve visited, there is not much of a crowd, but I could see the large space being able to accommodate a morning rush of caffeine-craved customers.

If you’re at the Topsail shore and looking for a quick pastry/coffee stop, definitely check out the Sneaky Freaky Bake Shop. They are open Tuesday-Saturday from 7:00 am – 7:00 pm, and are closed on Sundays and Mondays (bummer, I know). But if you wait it out until Tuesday morning rolls around, I promise it’s worth it!

Has anyone else ever been to Topsail? Please let me know in the comments below! I’d love to hear of other places to visit/sites to see.

Wanderlust Wednesday: Sabrina’s Cafe

“Name your favorite brunch food and I guarantee they have it.”

Philadelphia has yet another showstopper brunch location, and that is Sabrina’s Cafe. Pancakes, waffles, stuffed French toast, burgers, brunch specials, coffee, the list goes on and on. Now.. if you didn’t gather from a previous post of mine, I am a ginormous fan of Green Eggs (see review here). Like, I’ll rave about it until the end of time.

But… Sabrina’s is a huge contender for my #1 spot. This is one of the most outstanding brunch spots in Philly.

 Now, on with it.

I’ve had everything from breakfast food (French toast) to lunch goodies (burgers/sandwiches). Though a small detail, coffee is obviously v important to me on a Sunday morning, and they always provide me with copious amounts of that as well.

I have to say, French toast is a favorite of mine anywhere. In particular, the Stuffed Challah French Toast at Sabrina’s is especially tasty. Layered between two thick slices of French toast is a combination of cream cheese, bananas, and honey. A brunch-goer’s DREAM.

IMG_20170523_183134

I have also had their Black Angus burger with lettuce, tomato, provolone, and sautéed onions. Cooked to perfection, this burger was enough to feed two people! But obviously, as you can guess, I ate it all. I have to mention it was complimented by some of the best fries around.

untitled51

My fiancé decided to try the brunch special of three burger sliders, topped with ham and other delightful condiments. I have no doubt he liked it because he also devoured the entire meal and cleaned his plate. We also continue to come back fairly consistently, so…

If you’re in the area, there are five Sabrina’s locations: Italian Market, Art Museum, University City, Wynnewood, and (the only Jersey location) Collingswood. It might also help to note that, at least at Wynnewood, you can call ahead and put your name in! I’m just saying, there’s a reason we are returning customers.

Wanderlust Wednesday: La Colombe Coffee Roasters

“This is like a grown-up tea party!”

La Colombe might have just turned into my new favorite coffee shop on weekends. Considering I don’t even live near one, and it’s near my boyfriend’s house, that means I need to leave the comfort of my home to get there – and I’m okay with that! I went to
La Colombe a couple weeks ago, and it didn’t disappoint. We were on the hunt for good-quality coffee and a sit-down experience, we received both.

Even on MLK day, where 50% of people are at work, the place was packed! There was a decent line already formed, but we were alright with that considering we needed time to skim the menu (and it moved fast anyways). La Colombe had an assortment of breakfast pastries, you’ll see my chocolate chip scone above, as well as hot breakfast sandwiches you could order. At 11:00 am, they open up their lunch menu, and you can order hot food for breakfast or lunch, as well as already prepared cold sandwiches!

La Colombe has a very industrial/rustic feel on the inside. It’s awesome. Switching it up from the usual dining settings gives this place a fun edge. The fact that you can see a lot of their machines and behind the counter really sells its authenticity.

Back to the coffee, they serve it to you in coffee mugs as if you’re taking it back to your living room you walked out of *though the place does not have a living room feel lol*. The coffee is delicious, I was a huge fan. I’m not a big coffee connoisseur, however I’m getting there. The coffee tasted really good, as did the scone.

I’m hopeful to find my way back to this place soon, as the girl beside us ordered a scrumptious-looking grilled cheese and tomato soup. The soup had cheese oozing out the sides between two toasted pieces of bread. I thought it couldn’t get any better, then I saw the frozen coffee drink she ordered and wish I’d have known about the frozen beverages! I love iced/frozen coffee drinks.

Nevertheless, awesome place with great coffee/food/atmosphere. I intend to go back soon! Been to a great coffee shop in Philly? Let a girl know in the comments below!

Wanderlust Wednesday: Green Eggs Cafe

“I’ve been here five times in the past three months.”

img_20170108_115211818

I have nothing but incredibly complimentary adjectives and words to describe this brunch spot. The first time I went to Green Eggs was in October, and I have been back FOUR TIMES since then. It’s cash only, but I’m not mad about it. I think for awhile I had tried every specialty French toast they offered. Most recently, I opted for the savory side of dishes, and tried the Cajun Crab Mac & Cheese. Life changing. I know I’m a bit overdramatic when it comes to good-tasting food, but I have to be. This place is worth the hype, and the wait, whether it’s raining or a blizzard outside.

I really have not had one bad dish from this café, and neither have any of the people I’ve dragged there. The standard French toast options they offer on a daily basis are solid choices, and then the seasonal French toast specials are even better. I’ve had the Pumpkin Cheesecake Stuffed French toast, Salted Caramel Banana Stuffed French Toast, and Crème Brule French Toast. The café is BYOB, but they will serve you a mean specialty latte, which they feature consistently on their specialty menu.

This time I tried the Cajun Crab Mac & Cheese. Imagine cavatappi pasta drowning in cajuny creamy cheeses with a topping of crab meat.

My boyfriend had a specialty sandwich which featured sliced steak with a chipotle cheese mayo topped with onions and peppers.

My colleague had a specialty hash with a combination of diced potatoes, cheese, pork roll, and eggs sunny-side up, with a drizzle of ketchup to top it off.

There are three locations of Green Eggs Café in the city of Philadelphia: South Philly (1306 Dickinson St.), Northern Liberties (719 North 2nd St.), and Midtown Village (1301 Locust St). I have been to the South Philly and Northern Liberties locations, both phenomenal. Each time I’ve gone in South Philly, I haven’t bothered waiting for a table and grab a couple seats at their breakfast bar. This saves a lot of time, as the wait for Green Eggs can sometimes be 30-45 minutes – but that’s because it’s a popular spot. In South Philly, there is space to wait inside, whereas in Northern Liberties, you’re stuck out in the elements. Not bad on a sunny afternoon in May, semi-miserable during a blizzard in January. I will say, they are generally pretty quick at turning over tables, as we are usually in and out in about an hour, sometimes even 45 minutes!

Overall, definitely a place worth trying. I mean, I can’t talk it up enough, and it is my favorite location for brunch on the weekends in the city.

Let me know if you have a favorite brunch spot that has a Philly location. Now that I’m obsessed with all things brunch, I’d love to try new places!
